Identifying a Representative Sample

To create a truly representative sample and to yield best results, compile a list of contacts that represent the groups below. In a Microsoft Excel (or similar) worksheet, include the following columns for each contact: First and last name, organization, email. If the community wants to track survey responses based on demographic data, consider collecting additional data for each contact, including gender and race/ethnicity.

1. Funders investing in social/business entrepreneurship development (e.g., Banks, credit unions, angel investors, VC’s, social impact investors).

2. Education (e.g., key leaders in local K-12, university, community college and technical/vocational education systems, education reform leaders).

3. Talent developers/recruiters (i.e. HR directors, professional recruiters).

4. Entrepreneurs and business leaders committed to “on-boarding” a diverse pipeline of emerging entrepreneurial talent (e.g., representatives from start-ups, small businesses and large businesses).

5. Dealmakers that serve businesses and entrepreneurs in transactions that help businesses start and grow (e.g., lawyers, accountants).

6. Neighborhood/Civic Leaders from diverse neighborhoods (e.g., neighborhood groups, associations), community development organizations (e.g., urban renewal groups, affordable housing initiatives), faith based organizations, and young professional associations.

7. Entrepreneurial Support organizations that support entrepreneurs and venture creation (e.g., business incubators and accelerators, small business centers).

8. Research/Policy Organizations Local research, data tracking and/or policy/advocacy organizations working to document and advocate for entrepreneurship.

9. Local policy makers and administrators that set and implement local policies (e.g., mayors, city/county councils, city/county administrators).

10. Media representatives telling your community’s ever-changing story of inclusivity and innovation. Include representatives from print, TV, digital, and social media that follow and/or track the story of local innovation and entrepreneurship. New media such as bloggers and other sources of opinion makers are encouraged.
